It seems that the world’s number one golfer Rory McIlroy has found his kryptonite and no, it’s not any other player on the Tour, but the unofficial fifth Major tournament of golf, the US PGA Players Championship. The ‘boy wonder’ came to be termed as ‘boy blunder’ on every alternate fairway at the TPC Sawgrass as he kept on hitting stray shots and lost ground so much as not to make the cut at the event. His record at the event reads three attempts and three missed cuts and it makes it pretty clear why the 23 year old Irishman decided not to take part in the $ 9.5 million or £ 6 million event last year.
Of course, he will not take the chance of missing The Players Championship next year once again after all the furor surrounding his absence in the event of last year. After the finishing the event with a four over score, Rory McIlroy stated that he will be back and promised to put on a better show next time around, adding that he somehow needed to learn how to get a hang of the course. He admitted that the course had something in it which he couldn’t get the hang of, in spite of making three appearances already.
While speaking, he noticed the name of Zach Johnson on top of the leader board, with a full twelve shots ahead of the Irishman and McIlroy seemed to be perplexed by it. This is the first time he has failed to make the cut in over a year and he is not too happy about it.
Rory McIlroy added that having hit the same shots that qualified him for the cut at the Quail Hollow, it is almost shocking that he had to miss the cut here.
Rory Mcilroy lost his number one position in the world of golf as Luke Donald won the Transitions Championship on Sunday in Miami. Luke Donald only needed a win in Florida to win back his much coveted numero uno position in the golf world rankings. Rory Mcilroy lost his number one spot to his former Ryder Cup partner as Luke Donald won a four man play off.
Luke Donald had a brilliant run of five birdies in the very first eleven holes and this moved the former world number one golfer into serious contention for the tournament. He then secured his position in the tournament with a brilliant seven successive pars to ensure that he finished a great sixteenth top ten finish in his last twenty two events.
Luke Donald hit a beautiful approach shot on the very first hole of the play off with a good seven iron from the rough and then went on to hole the putt which ensured his victory. Robert Garrigus also looked like a prospect for winning the tournament as he opened with a good birdie but then he went on to miss the putt which dashed his chances of winning the tournament.
This victory of Luke Donald was the third European victory in a single row after Rory Mcilroy won at the very important Honda Classic and Justin Rose won at the Cadillac Championship. This will prove to be a huge morale booster for Donald as he gears up for the very important Masters. He said that he feels that he has achieved a lot in his golf career and this win is just the right preparation he needs as he now has two weeks off before he goes to Augusta.
He said that although it feels great to be the number golf player again but it is a nervous prospect too. Though he admits that getting right to the top was a much more nervous affair as he was not concentration on reclaiming his lost position much from Rory Mcilroy. He was only concentrating on winning the tournament and thankfully for him everything worked out extremely well.
Rory Mcilroy was very quick to praise Luke Donald, his Ryder Cup partner. He came on twitter and publicly congratulated him and also admitted the fact that he really enjoyed his time as the world number one – and at the very least it would be on Rory Mcilroy’s statistics page for ever, for him to look back on!
Northern Ireland has not had much of a history in any sports to celebrate or rejoice to but with the meteoric rise of golfer Rory McIlroy to the top of the rankings in golf has given them something to cheer about. Furthermore, if you are in Northern Ireland come St. Patrick’s Day, you are bound to be greeted with a song made especially for the world number one golfer by the Corrigan Brothers. Yes, you heard that right! The number one golfer in the world has got his own song, written by his own people.
“The Rory McIlroy Song” has been written by the three Corrigan brothers, Gerard, Donncha and Brian and have also added their own tune to it to mark the crowing of their very own Rory McIlroy as the number one golfer in the world after the 22 year old won the Honda Classic to stake his claim to the top position in golf, displacing Englishman Luke Donald. This has made the feeling all the more special for the Irish folk, who still harbor feelings of hatred for the English who dominated them for centuries in the name of the Queen.
McIlroy, who was already a legend in his native land after winning his first Major, the US Open in 2011 will be sung this song personally by the Corrigan Brothers when he gets home. According to Gerard, Rory has achieved an amazing milestone and he deserves this song to mark his achievement.
He also added that the feat that Rory McIlroy has achieved is remarkable, considering the fact that he hails from a country that is much deprived and in the shadows of the English and the Irish all the time and this success has brought Northern Ireland out of the shade and straight into the limelight.
